Eala struggled to find her rhythm against the experienced Mertens, who controlled the match from the baseline and capitalized on key break opportunities. The Belgian quickly took command in the opening set, before tightening her grip in the second to close out the match in convincing fashion.
Despite the defeat, the Filipina star showed flashes of promise throughout her Madrid stint, gaining valuable experience against top-level competition on the clay courts.
